I shoot stuff in the face and don't stand in bad. I also call stuff and quasi raid lead when needed.

I recall our second Domo kill in SR. We went beyond our planned duration and I started calling out when to stack for scorp and spread for cat. Being ranged DPS allows me to have the attention for the rest of the raid.

Gah! Wordpress ate my long reply. Here is the short version. I disagree. Tanking is one of the easier roles.... unless you tank AND raid lead. Off tanking is probably the easiest role. Though MDPs is not super hard it is easy for them to lose situational awareness and therefore they stand in the fire the most. They have the hardest time retaining situational awareness.
I think I have done 5 out of 6 of the raid roles. I would not say that main healing/tank healing is easier than tanking. Healing is the role that is most dependant on your team. A good healing team makes it easy, especially if you are the 'third healer'. If you are the biggest gun healer on a shaky team then it is not at all easier than tanking.

Coming from someone that's done all 4 roles in a raid environment and if I do say so myself....I'm decent at all 4!

Hardest to easiest.

Tanking - The hardest role that requires the most situational awareness. As a tank you are the QB of the raid. You must know the mechanics of the fight inside and out. You must know where to position the boss / adds so they are not cleaving, tail swiping and must provide back to your melee dps. You have to know when to use CD's (similar to a healer) and what the bosses abilities do. Where the next set of adds will come from and keep threat (not so much of an issue now).

Healing - isn't too difficult, especially when you have synergy with your fellow healers. Once you know how people play you can rely on someone covering your slack. You do have to be aware of some raid mechanics due to knowing when to use your CD's or when tanks will be swapping and also when your tank will be ranging you.

Melee DPS - Harder than ranged dps, easier than healing or tanking. Pew pew stand out of bad (which the whole raid must do). Keep yourself to the back 180 of the target, learn to interrupt when needed. Don't worry about what's going on w/ tanks, rely on your healers to take care of unavoidable damage and follow your priority on dps abilities.

Ranged DPS - by far the easiest role. pew pew, stand out of bad (which the whole raid must do) don't worry about what's going on w/ tanks, rely on your healers to take care of unavoidable damage and follow your priority on dps abilities. There are some fights that require add control and agro management (Misdirect etc) but for the most part, ranged dps have the least responsibilities.

Regardless of your role, everyone must know their class well, especially in a 10 man environment where everyone's actions have more weight than in a 25 man raid.

For progression fights, everyone needs to be on their A game. You're only as strong as your weakest link.

Thanks for the great advice! I know just from getting more familiar with heroics and trolls that the better I know the fight, the faster I can react.

I definitely need to improve with targeting. Sometimes I'm not sure what I should be hitting and "default" to tank's target which might not always be the right target. Again, that's learning the fights and experience.

I need to practice strafing (yes, I'm sure I pulled those adds in BoT because when I moved the camera swung around 180 and I ran in the opposite direction I thought I was running..../facepalm)
