I had it kick in one in UK on my 80 Death Knight. I had gone through a variety of specs before settling on an Unholy which included Scourge Strike. The problem was that I hadn’t thought to check the trainer after that last respec. And this was several months later.

The person running Rankwatch joked about it about halfway through. I hadn’t said anything and had just kept doing my regular rotation so I was seeing the message quite often. As soon as we downed the final boss, I immediately opened a portal to Ebon Hold. As far as I can tell, the only untrained spell that character has is Corpse Explosion, which I have never had a reason to put points into.

It absolutely checks your own stuff, and that’s one of the most useful tricks! My paladin has levelled with dual spec, rarely uses Ret, so when I switch to it I always have a lot of stuff downranked. RankWatch tells me which, and I get my stuff fixed up. Just use “/Rankwatch none” and it’ll only tell YOU what stuff is downranked, not whispering other people.

I’m always thankful for people who have this. It’s generally not a problem for me since I’m mostly a healer and Clique takes the highest rank in the spellbook, but all this dual-speccing is making me do stupid stupid things. I used Blessings that were 2 ranks lower until a guildie asked me WTF was going on

So, a question: if I get this addon, can I check myself? I don’t want to run it in PuGs, just check all my chars for lower ranks since I’m sure I have a lot. Or do I have to talk someone into running it and coming with me to a dungeon?

That is true, if they have not trained. Though I would argue that joining a heroic at lvl80 before you both to train is far more rude. But I do turn it off if some tells me they haven’t trained yet. That can happen if ot is a spec specific skill and you trained while in another spec.
Buuuut in the situation I wrote about the guy had trained as far as I could tell.

Very true, and we usually both silence the addon temporarily after someone has said “oops”. However, there are two cases where it’s useful to keep on:

Someone is using a spec they don’t often use and have lots of spells downranked, and want to fix them all. RankWatch will tell them which ones they still need to fix.

Someone who ignores the message or claims his spells are right (Occasionally this is true) and the addon is messed up. If this person is especially bad, it’s appropriate to send the messages to party chat I think to try to embarrass him into fixing it.

If someone showed up in your pug wearing a fishing pole instead of a weapon, you’d probably keep bugging him until he switched to his weapon. Using downranked spells is the same as wearing the wrong set of gear. Easy mistake to make, easy mistake to fix, high potential cost to party members if it’s not. (I’ve seen healers using spells 3 ranks low. They’re usually incredibly grateful to find out what’s wrong with them).

Sometimes people haven’t trained the new rank yet. Leveling/PvPing with my bf in a battleground, the first time it popped up, it was nice. “Oh, guess I haven’t trained in a while. Oops.” But then it kept spamming. He asked the dude to turn it off, and the guy was like “If you train it’ll stop.” Yeah, that’s nice, let me just leave this dungeon/battleground RIGHT THIS SECOND, brb guys, don’t kick me (which people do), and go train so you don’t have to go out of your way to open the addon options to tell your addon to stfu for one entire dungeon/battleground.

Rankwatch, imo, is like Failbot. It’s useful the first couple of times, but letting it spam somebody after they’ve realized they’ve made an oopsy is just rude/thoughtless.
